What Is An Organic Acid Testing (OAT)?

Organic acid testing (OAT) profiles 76 urinary metabolites. These organic acid molecules are byproducts of cellular metabolism and give us a snapshot of human cell activity. This includes the digestion of food and metabolism by the GI (gastrointestinal flora) or gut microbiome.

Who Is This For?

OAT testing can be useful for anyone who is looking to improve their overall health and well-being, as well as for those who are experiencing a range of chronic health issues that may be related to metabolic imbalances.

In particular, OAT testing may be recommended for individuals who are experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Digestive issues, including gas, bloating, and constipation
  • Chronic fatigue and low energy
  • Mood imbalances, including anxiety and depression
  • Neurological issues, including headaches and brain fog
  • Immune dysfunction, including autoimmune conditions and chronic infections
  • Behavioural issues, including ADHD and autism spectrum disorders

OAT testing may also be recommended for individuals who have a family history of metabolic disorders or who are at risk for developing certain health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or Alzheimer's disease.

Ultimately, OAT testing can provide valuable information about a person's metabolic health, which can be used to guide targeted interventions to improve overall health and well-being.

Exploring Neuropsychiatric Connections

Clostridium (Bacteria)

Has been associated with

Neuropsychiatric Conditions:

  • Depression
  • ASD (Autism)
  • Bipolar

Gastointestinal Conditions:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Candida Overgrowth

Clostridium and Candida are two types of microorganisms that are linked to neuropsychiatric conditions. Clostridium is a type of bacteria that can produce toxins, which can damage nerve cells in the brain and lead to various neuropsychiatric symptoms. For example, some strains of Clostridium have been linked to symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), such as impaired social communication and repetitive behaviours.

Candida (Yeast)

Has been associated with

Neuropsychiatric Conditions:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

Other Conditions:

  • Migraines
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Cognitive Decline

Clostridium and Candida are two types of microorganisms that are linked to neuropsychiatric conditions. Candida, on the other hand, is a type of yeast that can overgrow in the gut, leading to a condition known as candidiasis. Candida overgrowth can cause inflammation in the gut, which can in turn lead to inflammation in the brain, resulting in a variety of neuropsychiatric symptoms, including anxiety, depression, and cognitive dysfunction.
