What Is MycoTOX Testing?

Mycotoxin Exposure Testing (MycoTOX) is a urine metabolite test that looks at mycotoxin exposure and levels. Mycotoxins are metabolites produced by fungi like mold found in buildings, vehicles and food products. (E.g. Grains, Coffee beans). The majority of ingestion is through foodborne or airborne contaminants.

Who Is This For?

The MycoTOX urine test by Great Plains Labs is typically recommended for individuals who have been exposed to mold or suspect they have been exposed to mycotoxins and are experiencing symptoms that may be related to mycotoxin exposure.

Some common symptoms associated with mycotoxin exposure include:

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Respiratory problems,
  • Neurological symptoms
  • Immune system dysfunction

The test may also be recommended for individuals with chronic illnesses or autoimmune conditions, as exposure to mycotoxins may exacerbate these conditions.

The test can be particularly useful for those who live or work in buildings with water damage or other mold-related issues. It can help identify the specific mycotoxins that may be present in the environment and allow for targeted treatment and remediation.

It is important to note that the MycoTOX urine test should be interpreted in the context of the patient's overall clinical picture and should not be used as a stand-alone diagnostic tool. A healthcare provider can help determine whether this test is appropriate based on an individual's symptoms, medical history, and exposure risk.

Exploring Neuropsychiatric Connections

There is growing evidence to suggest that mycotoxins, particularly those produced by molds found in water-damaged buildings, can contribute to the development of neuropsychiatric conditions in humans. Here are some examples and research studies that illustrate this connection:

Depression and Anxiety

A study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that individuals who were exposed to mold and mycotoxins in their homes were more likely to report symptoms of depression and anxiety than those who were not exposed. The study concluded that exposure to mycotoxins may be an important risk factor for neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

A study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychiatry found that children with ASD had higher levels of mycotoxins in their urine than typically developing children.

The study suggested that exposure to mycotoxins may be a contributing factor in the development of ASD.

Schizophrenia

A study published in the journal Schizophrenia Research found that individuals with schizophrenia had significantly higher levels of mycotoxins in their urine than healthy controls.

The study suggested that exposure to mycotoxins may be a contributing factor in the development of schizophrenia.

Cognitive impairment

A study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that exposure to mycotoxins was associated with cognitive impairment in adults.

The study concluded that mycotoxins may have neurotoxic effects that can impair cognitive function.
